The Norfolk Broads was considered to be a place of natural beauty. It was until the 1960's that Dr Joyce Lambert proved that the Broads was a location where peat was excavated and later flooded. The Romans first exploited the rich peat beds of the area for fuel, and in the Middle Ages the local monasteries excavated as a business.
