Boat Safety Scheme launch at Norfolk Boat Jumble 29th Mar 2007

The Broads Authority will be launching its Boat Safety Scheme at the Norfolk Boat Jumble at the Norfolk Showground on Sunday 1st April - the day the scheme comes into operation.

The Norfolk Boat Jumble is held just once a year at the start of the boating season, and gates open at 10:00 am.

Now the Government has approved the Boat Safety Scheme byelaws larger motor vessels will need to have a boat safety certificate before they can use the rivers and broads.

Broads Authority officers and Rob McLean from the National Boat Safety Scheme office, will be at the show to provide information and answer questions on the boat safety scheme requirements and what they mean to boat owners.

Brian Walshe, a Risk Manager from the Norfolk Fire Service will offer advice on fire risk reduction.

The boat safety scheme is being introduced to the Broads over a three year period. Boat owners affected by the introduction this year have all been sent letters advising them of the requirement to comply with the scheme by Sunday.

Seventy per cent of private owners who are affected by the scheme and have paid their tolls have provided evidence that they have a valid certificate.

There are a number of exemptions to the scheme and boat owners are encouraged to contact the Broads Authority to obtain details.
