Sunday 21 September 11m- 4pm, Salhouse Broad
Trans Atlantic rower Dr Liam Hughes will open the Broads Green Boat Show on Sunday 21 September at Salhouse Broad in Norfolk.
The show, which is open from 11am to 4pm, is the only boat show to showcase green energy by demonstrating rowing, paddling, pedalling, sailing, electric and biofuel-powered boats as well as fuel cells, solar panels and wind turbines.
About 1,000 people are expected to turn out for the event where they will be able to take to the water in a wide range of boats including canoes, kayaks, electric, pedal and rowing boats, yachts and dinghies. They will also be able to travel to the show by electric water taxi. It will be running a regular service from Granary Staithe by Wroxham Bridge starting at 10.00am.
In addition to the boats on show Broadland District Council’s energy bus will be promoting ways of reducing household energy and giving away free energy saving items.
There will be a large marquee with displays from local companies and environmental organisations. A traditional jazz band will provide entertainment and light refreshments will be available. Admission is £3, including car parking and the water taxi fare, including admission, is £5.
This is the third annual Green Boat Show which is organised by the Broads Society in partnership with the Electric Boat Association and the Broads Authority. Use of the Broad and surrounding land is kindly donated by Salhouse Broad and this year access to the waterside has been much improved with generous car parking in fields behind the Broad.
Dr Hughes, a consultant interventional cardiologist at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, was a member of the rowing team that smashed the world record for the quickest Atlantic crossing using sheer muscle power in January this year, raising money for the cardiac unit at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital. He will open the show at noon.
